Year Two

Throughout the year, children will develop their Working Scientifically Skills

  • using simple equipment to observe closely including changes over time
  • using observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions, noticing similarities, differences and patterns
  • identifying, classifying and grouping items related to their science learning
  • performing simple comparative tests
  • gathering and recording data to help in answering questions including from secondary sources of information

In Summer 2, children will be learning about Living Things. This includes:

  • describing how a habitat provides for the basic needs (food, water, shelter) of the animals and plants that live there
  • knowing that plants and animals depend on their habitat in order to survive, e.g. for food, for spreading seeds, for shelter
  • knowing that some animals eat plants, some animals eat meat and some eat both
  • recognising and naming some common animals that have plants as their food source, e.g. cows, sheep, horses
  • recognising and naming some common animals that have animals as their food source, e.g. a cat, an insect eating bird
  • recognising and naming some common animals that have both plants and animals as their food source, e.g. humans
  • explaining what a simple food chain is
  • knowing that a food chain always starts with a plant
  • knowing that the arrow in a food chain means ‘is eaten by’
  • placing plants and animals in the correct order to make a food chain,
    e.g. rose bush, greenfly, bird
           grass, rabbit, fox
  • learning about pollinator researcher Alexandra Harmon Threatt

In Summer 1, children have been learning about Plants. This includes:

  • observing the growth and plants and describing how a seed or bulb grows roots, a stem, leaves and flowers
  • describing the stages of plant growth from seed/ bulb to mature plant
  • sequencing pictures of plant growth
  • describing the appearances of healthy and unhealthy plants
  • knowing what plants need to grow and be healthy - water, light, suitable temperatures - and explaining what will happen to a plant if they do not have one of these
  • learning about biochemist Marie Clark Taylor who studied how light affects plant growth

In Spring 2, children have been learning about Animals Including Humans. This includes:

  • understanding how we can stay healthy including the importance of exercise, diet, hygiene and medicines
  • learning about biochemist Katalin Kariko who helped to create the covid vaccines

In Spring 1, children have been learning about Animals Including Humans. This includes:

  • understanding what animals need and what will happen if they do not have this
  • describing how baby animals change as they grow and age
  • ordering and understanding the life stages of humans and some of the changes that happen

In Autumn 2, children have been learning about Living Things and Their Habitats. This includes:

  • identifying things that are living, dead or have never been alive and explaining the similarities or differences between them
  • identifying the characteristics of living things identifying different types of habitats including microhabitats
  • understanding that living things live in habitats that they are suited to
  • recognising how habitats provide for needs of animals
  • understanding how animals and plants depend on each other
  • learning about pollinator researcher Alexandra Harmon Threatt

In Autumn 1, children have been learning about Materials. This includes:

  • identifying different materials and their properties
  • sorting human and natural materials
  • explaining why some materials are more or less suitable to tasks based on their properties
  • investigating how materials can change shape by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching
  • learning about civil engineer and road builder John McAdam
