History

We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

At Mission Grove we aim to provide children with a vibrant, interesting and thorough education in history. In keeping with the National Curriculum, we ensure that the children are equipped with a secure knowledge about the key events and changes in British and World history.

However, just as importantly we will help them to develop into historians that understand how evidence is used to build pictures of the past, why different people may have different versions of the past and that asking questions is just as important as answering them.

At Mission Grove we believe that history should be taught in a vibrant, exciting way which brings different historical eras to life for the children. History should be interactive, stimulating and inspiring and to this end our children engage in a variety of historical experiences, including using the galleries, historical buildings and museums of London to further enhance historical studies.

We believe that, as far as possible, it is important that the children make connections between the historical era they study and the area they live in. London is packed with history. Every building and street tells a story about our city, country and the world. The locale around Walthamstow is rich in such opportunities.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, the National Curriculum programmes of study inform planning. History is largely taught thematically through a variety of topics. This allows the children to begin to use and apply a range of skills and knowledge in real contexts.
