Our Reception Curriculum

In Reception, we provide a broad, exciting and engaging curriculum that encourages children to be curious, confident and enthusiastic learners. Through a combination of purposeful play, adult-led learning and hands-on experiences, children develop the knowledge, skills and independence they need as they begin their journey through school.

Throughout the year, our learning is brought to life through a range of exciting topics and themes. These provide opportunities for children to explore the world around them, ask questions, share ideas and make meaningful connections across all areas of learning.

Books and stories are at the heart of our curriculum. Throughout the year, children will experience a rich range of high-quality texts, including stories that are diverse and multicultural and which reflect different families, cultures, backgrounds and experiences. We want every child to see themselves represented in the books we share, while also discovering and celebrating the lives and experiences of others.

We celebrate what makes each of us unique and encourage our children to recognise, respect and value differences. Throughout the year, we explore a variety of important celebrations, traditions and special occasions, helping children to develop an understanding and appreciation of the diverse world in which we live.

Alongside our topics, children develop strong foundations in early reading, phonics, writing and mathematics, while also having plenty of opportunities to develop their communication, creativity, physical skills and personal, social and emotional development.

Through our Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, children will learn the sounds they need to begin reading. They will learn how to put sounds together to read words and will begin reading simple books with growing confidence. Children will also use the sounds they know to write words and simple sentences. By the end of Reception, we want children to feel happy, confident and excited about reading and writing. 

We believe that some of the best learning comes from memorable experiences. Throughout the year, children enjoy trips, visits, special visitors, themed days and practical experiences that bring their learning to life and help them make connections with the wider world. 

Our Reception environment, both indoors and outdoors, is carefully planned to encourage children to explore, investigate, create, problem-solve and learn through play. Above all, we want every child to feel happy, valued and included, and to leave Reception with confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning.
