Year Two

Throughout the year, children will develop their Working Scientifically Skills

  • using simple equipment to observe closely including changes over time 
  • using observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions, noticing similarities, differences and patterns
  • identifying, classifying and grouping items related to their science learning 
  • performing simple comparative tests
  • gathering and recording data to help in answering questions including from secondary sources of information  

In Autumn 1, children have been learning about Materials. This includes:

  • identifying different materials and their properties
  • sorting human and natural materials
  • explaining why some materials are more or less suitable to tasks based on their properties
  • investigating how materials can change shape by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching 
  • learning about civil engineer and road builder John McAdam
